Its lobby is very impressive, and room is bigger than what I expected. The most impressive thing is the hotel pool. It is big and clean, very suitable for lap swimming.
The western food is really poor, so if you don’t like Chinese food it may be best to look elsewhere.
The concierge are great, and speak good English. The rest of the staff , especially in the restaurants, have very limited English skills. While I certainly don’t expect everyone in the world to speak English, in an international business hotel they should have staff who are able to communicate easily with international guests.
My room smelt smoky.
Overall it’s an OK hotel and the quality of furnishings etc is good
Amazing views of Wuhan and the Yangtze River. Though there is nothing much around then hotel, a 20 minute taxi ride across the river will take you to the City Center.
Rooms are nice and functional. The only complaint I have about the service, which was dealt with efficiently, is that with HouseKeeping. I had the do not disturb light on the door the entire day as I was catching up on some much needed sleep.
At around 4 pm, I received a phone cal from Housekeeping. They said” we notice that the DND light is ON. Would you like us to clean your room?”
The DND light means Do Not Disturb! Period. If I wanted housekeeping to clean my room, I would have called them. That’s the only issue I had with the hotel.
As a top-tier Marriott member I have lived in many hotels and suites, This Westin is the worst so far. I lived in a suite for two nights here.
They didn't clean our room at all for the first night. Because the lounge is closed for some reason, They were supposed to bring us food to the room as a substitute. But that didn't happen for two nights. When I asked the GM about it, She kept saying we were not in the room and they knocked the door. But there was actually a record of us calling them from our room around that time. Instead of trying to find excuses, which only escalate things, she really should have focused her energy to bring this to a resolution.
The hard wares are old. You should check out the gym and the pool area. They are depressing. But I'm fine with this. The general manager can't do much about the hardware
Here's what happened. Visa allows vendors like hotels and restaurants to ask customers if they want to be charged in their home currency or the local currency; it's called the "dynamic currency conversion." It's a total scam because the vendor adds a 3.5 percent charge and uses a bad exchange rate. On top of that, the credit card still imposes its own charge for foreign purchases. So the customer is just being ripped off. It's appalling that Visa facilitates this, but if you know to avoid it it's just an annoyance.
We watch for this scam closely and always insist on paying in the local currency. I've confirmed with my credit card company, though, that the Westin in Wuhan charged us in USD even though we explicitly asked to be charged in RMB; this added about $40 to our bill. To make matters worse I have twice called the hotel, asking them to reverse the charge and charge me in RMB. Twice I've been told they would get back to me. One week later, nothing. I gave them my email address and they have our contact information on our SPG account, but perhaps they think we'll just forget about it.
Wrong.
Only complaint is the charge for WiFi. Come on guys, this is the modern age. WiFi should be free in a hotel like this...
I am afraid the good impression stopped there. Check-in was laborious (took some 20 minutes) and staff across the board were poorly trained, had appalling English, and were downright rude to me when I tried to make their lives easier by speaking Mandarin (a language I have professional proficiency in). From there it became almost a competition to make my stay worse:
- I was checked-in to a smoking room (when it's clear under my SPG preferences I'm a non-smoker and a point I'd also thought I'd made clear in English and Mandarin at check-in);
- the wi-fi in the room wasn't working (once they'd finally moved me into a non-smoking room) and a booster needed to be brought to my room;
- the concierge promised me free laundry given the appalling check-in experience/wrong room allocation, only to then have his subordinate telephone my room later trying to back out of the promise;
- and then to cap it all of I injured myself (not to mention the blow to my pride!) when walking from the gym into the swimming area - no big deal if not for the fact a staff member was showing me the way! My compensation: a band-aid for a cut that required stitches.
On the plus-side of things, the rooms are extremely well-appointed as one would expect from a Westin property. I made use of the gym facilities and was very impressed with the space and the equipment available and I was able to stick to my normal training regime without resorting to creative ways to build up a sweat. The food too, is exceptional and finally, the reason I was there: our client's event went perfectly...though it still strikes me as odd that they would choose to hold it in such an inconvenient part of town.
Hopefully the service improves enough for me to choose this property again on my next trip to Wuhan in March.
Thank you to the concierge guys, they did a good job in trying to solve problems with a parcel.
The room was basic and served its purpose. Clean and did not smell like cigarettes.
Lounge offering was average, they did have a good whiskey.
The hotel was close to Yellow Crane Tower. 30 mins from East Lake. 30 mins from Hankou.
