Women supporting women stories! The way that this is a novelty in Chinese light novels I'm-
Caution: This one is for the foodies with fortified stomachs so you don't have to scavenge food from the fridge at 4am like me. Ancient Foodie is part cooking manual, part found family dynamics with hints of a yuri harem, and part feel good friends to lovers romance. Ancient Foodie is as cute as the cover: our female protagonist transmigrates into the body of a gaudy and seemingly ugly woman who has trapped a husband for herself. Obviously her actions make her less than favorable in the household and she must try and get them to like her. This our protagonist does by cooking the most delicious foods and enticing her in laws one at a time!
This is, first and foremost, cooking story. The transmigration aspect of the story is very minimal; we don't kn0w anything about the fl's life before she came into this body and it doesn't have much of an impact on the story itself. About 70% of the plot is centered around recipes, food business, or people's reactions to the food. The rest is dedicated to interpersonal relationships between the fl and the other main characters in the household. But it is done in such a light, fun, and heartwarming way that I was never bored of reading it.
If you're here for some smut or looking for blatant romance, go back. In this house we keeps things a little too pg. When I say this is a slowww burn...our leads basically played footsies and held hands while flirting across the table for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Nothing else happens till the last chapter. But they are ridiculously sweet! They start off as friends, become each others companions, partner in crime, confidant, and support. They both enjoy each others company and generally act like teenagers falling in love for the first time. The ml isn't a cold douche with a chip on his shoulder or an inflated ego even though he seems that way in the first couple of chapters. Instead, we get the sweetest boy who is just the most sincere, nice, and cute love interest. He just adores his wife so much it'll make you soft!
Like the ml every person in this book is a certified simp for the protagonist, and honestly, I don't blame them. Our heroine is a such a chill person and an amazing cook. The way she goes through every single character and captures their hearts through their stomach? An actual legend. She is also a feminist queen and a modern woman who helps and supports other women in need. She lifts them up, helps them become financially secure, and warms their hearts with her comfort food. I loved how there is no infighting in this book; no cat fighting, no harem drama, no pitting women against each other in order to vie for a worthless man's affections. It's so refreshing to read! Even female characters who generally follow an archetype like the mother or sisters-in-laws are fleshed out in here: their struggles given voice, and their grievances justified.
The sisterhood in this is just so amazing to witness! There are hints of gay between almost every single female character. It made every interaction between the fl and any women doubly funny if only for the ml's reactions!
All in all, a fun and cute story with lots of information about Chinese cuisine with a dash of romance, a pinch of heartwarming stories, and a liberal dose of comedy sprinkled in! 3.5 stars.

This was an enjoyable read. Honestly the translator in Novel Updates went above and beyond with showing us pictures of the foods being made and even videos, which has been a source of great enjoyment for me and has given me many recipes to try making in real life.
This is a slice of life story, so no crazy drama happening, just a tale of day to day life and how things and relationships change for the better due to the MC's food. It is a relaxing and likeable read, even if sometimes the focus gets put on the food a bit too much when you want to know what happens next in terms of the relationships instead.
It felt like the end was a bit rushed, but still a very relaxing read and all of the relationships got solved well in my opinion.
Read this for the food and to relax, don't expect any crazy drama or lots of plot.

It does suck how prejudiced her in laws are against her like yes they have some reason but she’s been so good once married in (cuz transmigration but) - however how has she not thought about etiquette and behavior? 🤷🏻♀️ whatever
