Nvidia follows up $3,000 Titan Z release with $100-ish GeForce GT 740 card

If you’re a PC enthusiast with a bottomless bank account, then yesterday’s Titan Z release probably had you salivating. However, if your PC component budget is more aptly described with words like “modest” and “tight,” then the company’s other new graphics card launch may be more up your alley.

Nvidia is following up the release of its Titan Z behemoth with the GeForce GT 740, a value-oriented graphics card that’s priced at roughly $100, depending on which revised version of the card you grab. Though previous budget releases this year employ the company’s new Maxwell architecture, like the Nvidia 750 Ti, the GT 740 is stuffed with an older Kepler GK107 GPU.

As for base specs, the Nvidia GT 740 sports 384 CUDA cores, a base clock of 993 MHz, and has a TDP of 64 watts. Ports include DVI-I, DVI-D, and mini HDMI. These cards will generally ship with either 1GB or 2GB of RAM. As you might expect though, some of these specs will get tweaked by companies who take the card, and make their own changes.

Right now on Amazon, you can find multiple variants of the GT 740 from firms like EVGA  and Gigabyte. Prices range from $95 to $105.

Nvidia GeForce Now vs. Shadow: Which streaming service is right for you?
Should Shadow or GeForce Now be your game streaming service?
Someone playing For

Cloud game streaming could be the next big thing in the video game industry. Large tech companies believe that consumers are ready to ditch gaming PCs that need to be constantly updated and perhaps even dedicated game consoles. The appeal of game streaming is understandable, as it allows you to scale up as games get more demanding without purchasing new hardware.

It's too early to tell if game streaming really will change the face of the industry, but we'll probably find out when Google Stadia and Microsoft's Project xCloud arrive later this year. In the meantime, two streaming services are already out in front of the competition: Nvidia GeForce Now and Blade's Shadow. So the question is: Which service wins in the Nvidia GeForce Now vs. Shadow battle?

Google’s new AI generates audio soundtracks from pixels
An AI generated wolf howling

Deep Mind showed off the latest results from its generative AI video-to-audio research on Tuesday. It's a novel system that combines what it sees on-screen with the user's written prompt to create synced audio soundscapes for a given video clip.

The V2A AI can be paired with vide -generation models like Veo, Deep Mind's generative audio team wrote in a blog post, and can create soundtracks, sound effects, and even dialogue for the on-screen action. What's more, Deep Mind claims that its new system can generate "an unlimited number of soundtracks for any video input" by tuning the model with positive and negative prompts that encourage or discourage the use of a particular sound, respectively.

The Vision Pro 2 may already be dead
Apple Vision Pro

According to reports from The Information, Apple is working on a cheaper non-Pro version of the Vision Pro headset -- and hitting pause on the development of the next high-end model. These rumors come from people involved with the supply chain and manufacturing of the Vision Pro, who claim that Apple has told at least one supplier that it's stopping work on the next Vision Pro.

Just like any other Apple product with "Pro" in its name, the Vision Pro was always meant to be part of a lineup of multiple models, so it's not too much of a surprise that a cheaper model is in the works. What is surprising, however, is that there may not be a second generation of the Vision Pro released alongside it -- at least not anytime soon.
