The author was a forward observer and "Blue" infantryman with the First Air Cavalry Division's reconnaissance squadron. He participated in at least 450 helicopter assault landings. Decorations include Combat Infantry Badge, Silver Star Medal, Bronze Star Medal (4th award), Army Commendation Medal (3rd award), and Purple Heart Medal (3rd award). He was elected a Distinguished Member of the 9th Cavalry Regiment (DMOR).
