Sliding Effect - Tutorial
Hello everyone. I’ve been asked how to make this effect. So, here it is.
- I’m definitely not an expert on photoshop, my knowledge is very limited.
- English is not my native language, so I apologize beforehand for any mistake.
- Basic knowledge on Photoshop is required.
- Please like/reblog the post if you think the tutorial has been useful.
Result:
First of all, I have to say that I did this after messing around with photoshop. I had no idea what I was doing. All I had was the final product in my head but no clue how to get there.
That leads me to second thing, if there is any other way to make this effect, a simpler way, please go ahead and tell me, share with me the links or whatever .. It will be gladly welcome.
But let’s get this started.
Step #1
Open the photos you’re going to work with in the same canvas. Make sure the two photos are of the same dimension (for this tutorial I’m working with 268x268)
I named them a1 (the one at the beginning of the gif and that it fades away) and b1 (the one that slowly appears)
a1:
b1:
You should have something like this:
Step #2
Copy the photo you want to vanish (a1 for me) as many times as you wish (In my case, just 3 times) and drag them to the bottom. This way, the gif can start showing a little bit longer the first photo and only then start to fade.
Notice that I put the photo I want to vanish above the one that it is going show at the end of the gif. (a1 above b1)
Then, you’re going to copy the second photo (b1) multiple times (I decided to make 20 more copies) and drag them above all, just in case, but turn the visibility off for now. You will see why in the following steps.
Like this:
Step #3
Go to View>New guide layout (I think that’s the way it is named in english)
These are my settings.
And this is very important. For this particular gif, I used 9 columns and 9 rows. Why? Because I wanted to achieve a 9x9 grid and it needed to be an odd number so the pattern I decided to use could work. Of course you can change it to your liking. In my original post I used a 19 columns and 19 rows, because I wanted a 19x19 grid.
This is the pattern I used:
See? That is why I needed an odd number of columns and rows. Because it starts from the middle, in the fifth square, leaving 4 squares at either side (remember it’s a 9x9 grid), and then it keeps going from there.
Step #4
Now the tedious part begins. If your photos are too dark, create a new layer of any vibrant color and put it between your two photos (a1 and b1). Like this:
This is going to help to visualize what your doing.. Trust me, you are going to need it.
Here’s where you need to pay attention, you’re going to do this:
- With the first photo selected (a1), mark the 5th square to the left side with the rectangular marquee tool and delete it. Now you can see which part you deleted thanks to the color layer.
- Move the color layer above a1 (it is a matter of organization)
- Select your first photo (a1 for me), go to Layer>Merge Down. This is going to merge a1 and b1 in a single layer and photoshop will rename the layer, probably, as b1 (in this case)
- Copy the layer that you just merged (This is because I want the effect to last longer in the gif, so I create more layers- It’s optional)
- Another copy of the merged layer and drag it above the next layer of the second photo (which means, above b2)
So you should go from this:
To this:
And then this:
Like I said, one copy it’s optional and the other one it’s been dragged above b2 and the color layer, so you can start the process again with the next layers.
Okay, I know is messy and tricky, but it is what it is..
Now you must repeat all that process, deleting squares according to the pattern, until the second photo has appeared completely.
Let’s try a second time:
Deleting the squares.
And then moving the color layer, merging, copying the merged layer, dragging the other merged layer now above b3. And so on.
Once you finish this, you can delete the color layer and all the layers of the second photo (all the b#) that may have been left.
Step #5
Copy the last layer -where you can’t see the first photo (a1) at all- multiple times, so the gif can last a little bit longer.
Step #6
Turn the layers to frames, set the delay to your liking, and do what you need to create a gif, like you usually do. And that’s it.
