“Construction should be decorated. Decoration should never be purposely constructed.” – Owen Jones

He meant nature should only be a model. Nothing should be designed for the decoration itself, the decoration had to make sense with the function of the design.

I tend to disagree. Everyone has their own likes and dislikes, why couldn’t something be designed firstly for the decoration or even decoration alone? People shouldn’t be told what to like, if there weren’t other styles and ways of tackling design, design wouldn’t be able to move forward, even if the decoration is unnecessary.

This is a modern version of an 18^th century ‘decoration constructed’ lamp. It is firstly a dog and then a lamp.

The Modern Day Mirror


Mirrors have been used for decoration and vanity throughout history. By the late 17^th century mirrors and more importantly the frames themselves played a significant part in the decoration of rooms. From the end of the renaissance till the early 1900s the frames were elaborate pieces of art-the twisting and curving suggesting feminine ideals of appearance and beauty. Mirror frames were slightly altered to live up to the taste of the time as the frames were cheaper than the mirror itself so were more easily replaced. Today, modern mirrors are not flamboyant or eccentric, with plain straight lines and are no longer used for decoration but their core use of giving a reflection. The male quality of logic and balance has been reborn from the symmetrical Greek design into your everyday household mirror.

Vincent Van Gogh - Self Portrait: Saint-R茅my

Vincent Van Gogh's revolutionary series of self- portraits were a way of documenting his mental deterioration. By using contrast in colours and detailed brushing patterns, this portrait from Musee d’Orsay creates a striking image presenting his own personal and honest view of his character. In doing this, the painting has been argued to be a most perfect display of an artist’s state of mind in self- portraits to date.
